Police: 6 Protesters Arrested During Black Lives Matter Demonstration

DETROIT (WWJ) - Several people were arrested in Detroit during a protest against police brutality Wednesday night.

According to police - six Black Lives Matter protesters were arrested after chaining themselves to the 3rd Precinct building and to trees in the surrounding area.

According to a statement released by BYP100 Detroit chapter and Black Lives Matter-Detroit - the demonstration was held to bring awareness to what would have been fourteenth birthday of Aiyana Stanley-Jones, a 7-year-old girl who was killed by Detroit Police Officer Joseph Weekley in 2010 during a police raid that was being filmed for a television show.

The action at the precinct followed a rally organized jointly by the two groups. Participants called for the immediate termination of Weekley from the police department.

According to police the arrests were made without incident -- and the peaceful protest continued.
