Plane crashes at Thunder Over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport
YPSILANTI, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) - A demonstration plane performing at the Thunder Over Michigan air show crashed over Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti around 4 p.m. Sunday.
The videos above from viewers Dan Phillips and Jasmin Jenkins show the pilot and the backseater of the plane, a MiG-23, ejecting and parachuting over Belleville Lake. Law enforcement confirms that both pilots were recovered safely and transported to an area hospital.
The plane crashed near the Waverly on the Lake apartment complex in Belleville. According to a statement from Detroit Metro Airport, the plane struck several unoccupied vehicles at the apartment complex. No one at the complex or air show was injured.
The cause of the crash is not known. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
The remainder of the show was stopped and spectators were asked to return to their vehicles.
This marked the 25th edition of the Thunder of Michigan air show. The two-event started on Saturday and was scheduled to conclude on Sunday.
