Person of interest in custody in murder of prominent Detroit doctor

(CBS DETROIT) - Detroit Police Chief James White says a person of interest in the murder of a prominent neurosurgeon is in custody.

"We are actively are still investigating this case, but we do have a person of interest that is in custody," said Chief White.

Dr. Devon Hoover was found shot to death inside his home last Sunday after Detroit police did a wellness check at his home on the 100 block of West Boston in Detroit's Boston-Edison neighborhood.

Chief White said the family alerted police on Sunday that something might be wrong.

"A member of the family called because he did not show up at an event that he was expected to show up at, when the officers arrived on the scene they were quickly concerned about some of the things that they saw, and as a result, they went into the home, and the rest is where we will find ourselves today," Chief White explained.

Police say the person of interest was arrested shortly after midnight Friday on unrelated charges, but that the prosecutor's office is not reviewing information submitted by police.

Chief White says he believes the person of interest knows what happened and believes this person knew Hoover personally.

"Preliminarily, our investigation reveals that this is an incident where the two parties knew each other we have no reason to believe that the community is or at any risk, this was not a random act," Chief White said.

Even though one person is in custody, police are still searching for information and asking the public for any information they may have.
