Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By 3 Vehicles While Walking Across Gratiot Avenue

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities have identified a pedestrian who died after being struck by three vehicles while walking across Gratiot Avenue.

Police say 45-year-old Junious Jones, of Detroit, was killed around 7 a.m. Thursday on Gratiot Avenue and South Knollwood Drive, between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads in Chesterfield Township.

According to police, Jones was on foot in the center turn lane on Gratiot when he was struck by a 16-year-old boy from Chesterfield who was preparing to turn onto S. Knollwood from southbound Gratiot.

The collision knocked Jones into the northbound lanes, where he was struck again by two separate vehicles. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police say all three drivers involved stopped at the scene and indicated that they did not see Jones prior to striking him. Police added that alcohol, drugs and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Traffic was restricted to the shoulders on Gratiot as police investigated the scene, but has since returned to normal.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone who might have witnessed the accident is urged to contact police at 586-949-2322.
