Pedestrian Struck By Car Along Merriman Road

WESTLAND (WWJ) - Authorities say a pedestrian is hospitalized after she was struck while walking across Merriman Road before dawn.

The incident happened around 4 a.m. Friday near Barrington Avenue, just north of Michigan Avenue in Westland.

Police say the victim — later identified as a 28-year-old Garden City — was attempting to cross the road when she was struck by a Ford Flex.  The driver involved, who was not injured, stopped at the scene and was questioned by police.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital where police said she was listed in serious condition Friday afternoon. Her name has not been released.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to have played a role, police said, an investigation by the Westland Police Department Traffic Bureau continues,

Merriman was shut down between Avondale and Palmer for several hours as police were investigating, but has since reopened.
