Pedestrian Killed While Crossing Unlit Street On Detroit's East Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - A man has died after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street on Detroit's east side in an area that has no working street lights.
The accident happened around 5 a.m. Tuesday on 8 Mile Road just east of Gratiot Avenue.
Police say a 57-year-old man was trying to cross the eastbound lanes of 8 Mile Road in the crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck that had the green light. The man was dragged another 200 feet before coming to a rest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 29-year-old man, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
Police say their initial investigation indicates that the driver just couldn't see the pedestrian, whose name was not immediately released.
A man, who only wanted to be identified as Charles, said he rides his bike through the area every morning -- and he's always on his toes.
"You're worried about people running you over because you don't have one a reflective vest, you don't have on any type of lights on your bicycle," Charles told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "You need that because, hey, these people out here don't know how to drive in the first place."
An investigation is ongoing.
