Apparel giant PacSun is in some hot water this Memorial Day, receiving backlash over a t-shirt design that some are calling controversial and offensive.

The design features a black and white American flag that is seen upside-down on the front of the shirt that was displayed outside of a PacSun location in Foley, Alabama.

The original photo was posted to Facebook by a shopper at Tanger Outlets on May 23. The shirt was later taken off the display after customer complaints, according to the New York Daily News.

"An employee with the Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. location at the Tanger Outlets in Foley, Ala., told the Daily News Monday a black A$AP Rocky-designed shirt was removed from the business after they received a complaint from a customer. The employee declined further comment and referred questions to the company's corporate office, which was unavailable for comment Monday."

The design was still available on the store's website on Monday afternoon.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, the flag should "never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
