1 Dead, 1 Critical, 1 Arrested Following Crash In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - One person is dead, one is critically hurt, and a third is behind bars following an accident on Detroit's east side.

Detroit police told WWJ Newsradio 950, Wednesday afternoon, they flashed their lights at a Chevy Impala that was speeding along Seaburn, near Warren and Chalmers, and the driver did not stop.

The driver continued on into another intersection where police say he blew through a stop sign, traveling at around 80 miles per hour, and was "t-boned" by a Cadillac.

Witnesses talking to WWJ's Kathryn Larson said that's when the Impala spun out, struck a "one way" sign, then a tree, and "went airborne." The driver rolled out and fled on foot, leaving two passengers behind.

He was caught, wrestled to the ground by police, and arrested.

A female passenger — who was sitting in it front seat — was killed, according to police. The backseat passenger was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The Cadillac driver who struck the fleeing vehicle was not injured.

"He was an innocent bystander," said neighbor who witnessed the crash. "He was coming across Warren this way, he was going west...and the car hopped out! From what I seen, the car just hopped out in front of him, basically, and everything just unfolded from there."

No names have been released.

An investigation continues.
