Oak. Co. Leaders Hesitant About Detroit Water Authority

PONTIAC (WWJ) - Oakland County leaders are hesitant to join a water authority that would eventually run Detroit's Water and Sewage Department.

On Thursday, the Board of Commissioners in Oakland County formed a study group to look at the issue. Commissioner Shelly Taub says there are some serious concerns.

"We're afraid that our citizens in Oakland County are going to endure, if we become part of this regional effort, a tremendous expense. This is not a win-win situation and that's what we are looking into and what I'm looking forward to looking into, finding out what are the numbers," says Taub.

Commissioners say they want more information before they commit to an authority board.

"We want firm figures, firm audit figures. We don't want just numbers thrown over the wall and accepted. We want to be able to look at the figures, answer to our constituents, our rate payers, and that's very important," says Bob Gosselin, chair of the newly-formed Oakland County Board of Commissioner study group.

Gosselin says they plan to meet with the Detroit water board next week, and they've also scheduled public hearings in Troy, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills and Pontiac.
