Neighborhood Favorite, Big Mama's Southern Kitchen, Totaled In Blaze

DETROIT (WWJ) - A popular west side restaurant up in flames Monday morning in the Grand River and Evergreen area.

Big Mama's Southern Kitchen has been a neighborhood favorite known for their peach cobbler, meat loaf and smothered pork chops. They've been in business for nine years in Old Redford and currently here in the Grandmont and Rosedale neighborhood.

"I'd like to stay in this area because the people have embraced me," she told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "And been so wonderful to me in Rosedale Park."

Restaurant owner Patricia Clay is concerned for her 15 employees who are going to be out of work until she finds another location.

"And I've had such great support," said Clay, "we were growing, so yeah, this is a set back -- but I feel this way -God's got my back."

A hot water tank appears to have been the culprit of this fire that gutted the kitchen, and left extensive smoke damage in the dining area.
