Motorcyclist Killed, 2 Others Hurt When Car Fails To Yield On Left Turn

GRAND LEDGE (WWJ) - A 60-year-old Grand Ledge man has been killed and two others injured in a motorcycle vs. car crash in Eaton County.

Eaton County Sheriff's officials say it happened Tuesday, just before noon, at the intersection of Hartel Road and St. Joe Highway in Oneida Township.

Ricci Joe Pierce died at the scene when the motorcycle he was riding, with a small trailer attached, was struck by a Buick sedan with three occupants.

According to witnesses, the car — traveling southbound on Hartel — made a left-hand turn onto St. Joe, failing to yield to the motorcycle which was going northbound on Hartel. The motorcycle struck the sedan on the passenger side, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, deputies said.

Two of the three occupants of the sedan suffered minor injuries, and one was transported to the hospital. Pierce had one passenger riding in his trailer who was unhurt.

The intersection was closed for an accident investigation but has since reopened.

There was no immediate word on any charges.
