Mother Apprehended At Detroit-Windsor Tunnel With 'Kidnapped' Children

DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a 43-year-old woman was apprehended at the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel when she tried to return to Michigan with her three children, whom she allegedly kidnapped.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the woman was taken into custody on Wednesday when she arrived at the tunnel, destined to Detroit, with three children -- ages 10, 11 and 12.

The officer who first spoke to the woman routinely searched her name in national databases and found that she had an outstanding warrant for custodial kidnapping, according to officials. Additional searches revealed missing person records for the three children, all issued by the St. Clair Shores Police Department.

The woman and her children have since been turned over to St. Clair Shores police for further investigation.

"Customs and Border Protection and its partnership with state and local law enforcement agencies were successfully able to facilitate the safe return of three minor children and bring the wanted person to justice," Rod Blanchard, Port Director, said in a statement. "I commend the CBP officers involved and the swift reporting by our partner agency."
