Michigan State Police report 86 crashes in Metro Detroit over 24 hours

(CBS DETROIT) — Metro Detroiters woke up Thursday morning to frigid temperatures and a few inches of snow on the ground.

Michigan State Police reported 86 crashes in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties over the past 24 hours and reminded drivers to slow down.

Several Michiganders CBS News Detroit spoke with Thursday, like Kim Jones, are embracing the snow and cold weather.

"This is Detroit," said Jones. "This is what you get."

Jones said Michiganders should be able to handle these conditions, but these freezing-cold temperatures are not fun to deal with.

"People get scared off of something they don't know, so if they're not used to this, we get more negative than positive," said Jones. "So they are going to take in the negative before they take in the positive."

Snow blanketed most of the state Wednesday night into Thursday morning. A mix of snow and single-digit temperatures made for some dangerous conditions.

"I tell myself, 'Lock in; relax, everything will be okay; keep pushing, and if something happens, something happens; that's it," said Lemuel Love.

Pediatrician Dr. Molly O'Shea warned that prolonged exposure to cold temperatures like we're currently experiencing can be dangerous.

"Remember, if you're shivering, if you're feeling like your body is slowing down and you can't really think as well as you normally do, it's time to seek warmth right away," said O'Shea. "Those are signs of hypothermia. Warm your body up. If your fingers are looking white and they are painful as they warm up, you might have frostbite, and you should seek care."

Feels-like temperatures will again be in the single digits on Friday.
