Michigan State Police investigating after Florida man's body found on I-96 in Detroit

(CBS DETROIT) - Michigan State Police are investigating after a Florida man's body was found on I-96 in Detroit Tuesday morning. 

The body was located at 6:20 a.m. on the eastbound shoulder of the freeway near Schaefer. 

An investigation revealed that a 59-year-old man from Fruitland Park, Fla., had been hit by a vehicle. 

The driver of the unknown vehicle left the scene. State police are looking for the suspect. 

"Currently we are looking for the driver that struck this man on the shoulder and then fled," said Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw. "We are currently attempting to notify his family. Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call 855.MICH.TIP or Crime Stoppers at 800.SPEAK.UP."

The local lanes of I-96 were closed at Southfield, with traffic being diverted to the express lanes, and authorities told drivers to expect delays.

The case is pending a report from the medical examiner and further investigation.
