Michigan Public Service Commission Seeks Flood Clean Up Volunteers

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) - The Michigan Community Service Commission is seeking volunteers to help assist with clean up efforts from the recent floods.
The Commission, which is the state's lead agency on volunteerism, has collected information from thousands of residents that have requested volunteer assistance.
Assistance has been given to numerous families, including the elderly and disabled, but there has been a shortage of local volunteers, according to the commission.
The Commission has created a volunteer opportunities web site were residents can log on and sign up to help in their communities through a variety of efforts including removing damp belongings, eliminating pungent smells and remove moldy drywall and paneling.
Volunteers willing to help can also call the Recovery Coordination Center at 2-1-1 to sign up, or visit the Volunteer Reception Center at Starr Presbyterian Church, 1717 W. 13 Mile, Royal Oak from 7:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, or Sunday, Aug. 31.
Those who volunteer are asked to bring:
- A lunch in case the work site might not be near a restaurant or grocery store,
- A water bottle to keep hydrated,
- Sturdy, thick-soled, closed-toed shoes,
- Safety glasses,
- Work gloves,
- Work clothes with long sleeves and pants to get dirty in,
- Hand sanitizer or wipes,
- Change of clothes to go home in.
