Michigan Pro-Abortion Rights Groups Study High Court Ruling
DETROIT (AP) — The president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan says her organization will examine similarities between Michigan's abortion clinic laws and rules in Texas struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.
Lori Carpentier told reporters on a conference call that Monday's 5-3 high court vote supporting Texas clinics doesn't "strike down any specific law outside" that state, but Planned Parenthood "will fight restrictions" of a similar nature in Michigan's laws. Among them: rules forcing abortion clinics to meet hospital-like standards for outpatient surgery.
Carpentier says the ruling offers "a framework for (legal) challenges" her organization will explore.
Michigan doesn't share with Texas a requirement that doctors performing abortions have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.
Michael Loepp, a spokesman for Michigan's Licensing and Regulatory Affairs agency, declined to comment.
