Michigan Goodwill Store Destroyed By Tornado To Reopen

PORTLAND, Mich. (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan Goodwill store is set to reopen about a year after it was destroyed by a tornado.

WOOD-TV reports that the Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids in Portland, located about 25 miles northwest of Lansing, will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the reopening on June 25.

The store was struck by an EF-1 tornado June 22, 2015 —  with winds of around 100 mph  — and a mother and two small children had to be rescued from the collapsed building.

A nail salon across the street collapsed and a Rite Aid was also hit, suffering what witnesses said was moderate damage.

An estimated $3.3 million in damage was caused when 132 buildings in the Portland were destroyed or damaged by the tornado, but no injuries were reported.

MLive.com reports that Portland Mayor James Barnes said many of the homes and buildings damaged by the tornado have been repaired or rebuilt over the last year.

The new 10,000-square-foot Goodwill store has an additional 4,000 square-feet that will house a career center.
