Michigan Fair Looking For Volunteers

ESCANABA, Mich. (AP) — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking for volunteers to staff its "pocket park" during next month's Upper Peninsula State Fair.

The park is a 1-acre (0.4-hectare) site within the fairgrounds in Escanaba. It caters to youngsters who are seeking outdoor adventure or to learn an outdoor skill.

Volunteers can help with activities such as catching and releasing bluegills in the U.P.-shaped pond, shooting pellet guns or bows and arrows, staffing the fire tower and greeting visitors.

The fair runs from Aug. 12-18. It draws more than 80,000 visitors each year.

Businesses and organizations could sponsor shifts during the fair by having their employees or members volunteer.
