Metro Detroiters Invited To Walk, Bike, Skate Down I-96 Sunday
LIVONIA (WWJ/AP) - Officials are inviting all metro Detroit residents to walk, run, bike or skateboard down a reconstructed stretch of I-96 before cars are allowed to hit the road.
The Michigan Department of Transportation is marking near-completion of the project to rebuild part of I-96 with an event from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21. Automated "driverless" cars will be featured traveling along the roadway as well.
The route is on westbound I-96 from Stark Road to Newburgh Road.
Residents can park at Madonna University in Livonia (36600 Schoolcraft Road) and get on part of the freeway at the southwest corner of the parking lot.
The 7-mile long stretch of I-96 in Livonia and Redford Township has been closed since April. The $148 million project to rebuild the roadway also includes bridge repair and replacement work.
The freeway is expected to reopen to traffic very soon, ahead of its planned October reopening.
