Meijer Gardens Sees Record Attendance In 2015, Its 20th Year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park says 2015 saw the largest attendance in the western Michigan attraction's history.

Meijer Gardens says Monday more than 775,000 guests visited during its 20th year, up from about 650,000 in 2014.

In 2015, many programs centered on the theme "Welcoming the World." In April, Meijer Gardens celebrated its 20th anniversary with the dedication and installation of Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei's outdoor sculpture "Iron Tree."

The exhibition "Splendors of Shiga: Treasures from Japan" displayed more than 60 works that previously hadn't been shown outside Japan.

And in June, The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden opened. The $22 million garden took years to build and offers a place for tranquility and contemplation that integrates contemporary sculpture with trees and plants.
