Masked Gunmen At Large After Deadly Double Shooting In Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for two masked gunmen who killed one person and injured another in a shooting on the city's east side.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday on Beaconsfield Street at Britian Avenue, in a neighborhood near I-94 and Cadieux Road.

According to police, four people were returning home from a nearby restaurant when two men wearing masks and dark clothing approached and announced a robbery.

Police say the suspects opened fire, fatally striking a 38-year-old man who was trying to run away. A 21-year-old man was also struck, although his injuries have been described as non-life threatening. Two women, ages 21 and 22, were uninjured.

The suspects fled the scene after the shooing. The first is described as a black male, about 5'6" tall and 185 lbs., wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and a black mask. The second suspect is described as a black male, about 5'6" tall and 200 lbs., wearing all dark clothing and a mask.

Sharee Nwagru, who lives nearby, said violence is nothing new in her neighborhood. Things are so bad, Nwagru says she sleeps with her cellphone speed dial set for a 911 call.

"They say they know me by name because I call the police so much around here," she said.

A woman, who did not want to be named, said the man killed was a father of four children with another on the way.

"He was nice, strong, intelligent, caring. He would help anybody in need," she said.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-596-5640.
