Man's Body Found In Elevator Shaft At Greektown Casino

DETROIT (WWJ) - Homicide investigators were called to the Greektown Casino in Detroit after a man was found dead in an elevator shaft.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said a security guard was making his rounds Friday morning when he made the gruesome discovery on the 13th floor of the casino's parking structure.

According to police, it appears the man, thought to be in his 40s, jumped from the 7th floor and landed on top of an elevator, which is how he ended up in the elevator shaft on the 13th floor.

At least two weapons were found at the scene. Other circumstances surrounding the man's death remain unclear.

Sources tell WWJ Newsradio 950 that the man's death is related to a shooting of a 13-year-old girl that occurred earlier Friday in Eastpointe, as well as the rape of a 15-year-old girl.

According to police, a suspect driving a blue Ford Fusion fired several rounds at the two girls around 7 a.m. as they were walking to East Detroit High School in the area of 9 Mile Road and Hayes Avenue. The 13-year-old received a gunshot wound, although her current condition is unknown. Reports suggest the shooter was actually targeting the older girl, whose parents filed a criminal sexual conduct complaint against him in Waterford.

Investigation into the shooting led to the suspect's vehicle being discovered at the casino's parking garage, where detectives from Detroit and Eastpointe police departments remain on the scene.

The area surrounding the casino, at Monroe Avenue and St. Antoine Street, is completely blocked off as police investigate.
