Man With A Dozen Drunken-Driving Convictions Heads To Trial

SUMPTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A man with a dozen drunken-driving convictions heads to trial in a case involving a crash that killed a Detroit-area girl.

Charles Cahill Jr. waived his right Wednesday to a preliminary examination, telling the judge he understood that would bind him over for trial.

Cahill was charged with second-degree murder in the death of 12-year-old Victoria Mack. Authorities say he crashed into a minivan in July at a stop sign in Sumpter Township, near Belleville.

Many of Cahill's convictions came since he lost his license in 1990. In 2011, he was released from prison after three years - two years short of his maximum sentence.
The Belleville man also was sent to prison in 1997. His first drunken-driving offense was in 1986.

He remains jailed on a $1 million bond.
