Man Shot, Killed Near Detroit Riverfront Fireworks Show
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A man was shot following an argument and rolled his SUV into a street barricade set up for Detroit's annual fireworks show before dying.
Detroit Police Sgt. Cassandra Lewis says the 37-year-old victim was trying to flee from another man shortly after 10 p.m. Monday at the Martin Luther King Apartments, just east of downtown.
The man fired shots into the SUV, striking the victim in the head. He drove a short distance before striking a wooden barricade across a nearby street. A passenger in the SUV was not hurt.
Lewis said the shooting "had nothing to do with the fireworks."
No arrests were made. The victim's name was not immediately released.
Police patrolled the area around the large complex of low-income apartments and condo-style units before and during the fireworks show which started about 9 p.m. — moved ahead an hour due to the threat of severe weather.
This latest follows an especially violent weekend in Detroit, during which Police Chief James Craig said there were 24 shootings, including two in the Greektown entertainment district – considered one of the safest areas of the city. Meantime, Detroit police are still looking for tips after 12 people were shot, one fatally, at a neighborhood block party on Saturday.
