Man Riding Bicycle On 23 Mile Road Fatally Struck By Semi-Truck

SHELBY TWP. (WWJ) - Police are investigating a fatal accident in Macomb County between a bicyclist and a semi-truck.

The accident happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday on 23 Mile Road just east of Schoenherr Road in Shelby Township.

Authorities say a 62-year-old Chesterfield Township man was riding his bike in the road when he was struck by a semi-truck, which was traveling westbound on 23 Mile. He was declared dead at the scene.

"Our investigation shows that he was on his way to work, he worked here at a factory here in Shelby Township," Sgt. David Taylor told WWJ's Mike Campbell.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

Taylor said pedestrians, especially overnight, should always use the sidewalk.

"We see it a lot. There are sidewalks here in Shelby Township, but people still like riding their bikes and walking in the street," he said. "I don't understand it."

The semi-truck driver stopped at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

"At this time, he's pretty shook up," Taylor said. "We're letting him calm down a little bit before we continue our investigation and speak to him about what actually happened."

Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Anyone who might have witnessed the accident is urged to contact the Shelby Township Police Department at 586-731-2121.
