Man Killed By Tow Truck On I-96 After Running Out Of Gas

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police say a man was putting gas in his van along an I-96 exit ramp when he was hit by a tow truck and killed.

Michigan State Police say 36-year old Reginald Wyatt, of Detroit, was standing on the side of his vehicle on the westbound I-96 exit ramp to Joy Road after his van ran out of gas around 2:25 a.m. Thursday. Troopers say Wyatt's van wasn't on the shoulder but rather in the actual traffic lane.

According to police, a 2011 Ford Super Duty tow truck was exiting onto the ramp when he struck Wyatt, who was standing in the lane.

Wyatt was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the tow truck, a 32-year-old Dearborn man, was uninjured in the crash.

Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The exit ramp was closed for just over two  hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.
