Man In Police Shootout Dies After Life Support Is Removed

WYOMING, Mich. (AP) — A man accused of shooting a police officer in a Grand Rapids suburb has died after being taken off life support.

Alan James died Saturday, nine days after he was shot while exchanging gunfire with police in Wyoming. Doctors had performed at least two surgeries since Jan. 29 but told family members that they couldn't save him.

Police say James fired at them when they arrived at his home to investigate a domestic complaint. An officer was shot but is recovering.

Jason Ronning, an attorney for the family, tells The Grand Rapids Press that a bad mix of prescription drugs may have caused James' erratic behavior.
