Man Gets 25-40 Years In Prison For Raping 11-Year-Old Girl On Walk To School
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ/AP) - A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 to 40 years in prison for sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl as she walked to catch a school bus in Highland Park.
Ramirez Dewberry was sentenced Wednesday in Wayne County court after pleaded guilty last month to criminal sexual conduct, kidnapping, assault and firearms charges in the December attack.
According to police, the girl was grabbed the morning of Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, as she walked to school along Church St. in the area of McNichols and John R. Police said the attacker dragged the child at gunpoint into an abandoned home where he sexually assaulted her.
The girl testified in court, carefully describing what her attacker did to her, saying he "asked her if she could twerk" and then told her to pull her pants down.
Police say tips led to Dewberry's arrest. Residents went door-to-door in an effort to solve the crime.
