19-Year-Old Man Arrested In Killing Of National Guard Soldier During Detroit Carjacking
DETROIT (WWJ) - A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the killing of U.S. Army National Guard soldier during a carjacking on Detroit's west side.
Sgt. Eren Stephens said the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of the Superland Market on Schoolcraft Road near Rutland Street, just east of the Southfield Freeway.
Stephens said the victim, 20, fought with the assailants before ultimately getting shot in the chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The suspects fled the scene in the victim's vehicle, a sliver Pontiac Grand Am, which has since been recovered.
Police on Monday questioned a 17-year-old, and Tuesday morning they picked up an 18-year-old woman who is also a person of interest in the murder. A 19-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday afternoon, and Stephens said they are looking for possible additional suspects as an investigation continues.
The man in custody was not immediately released.
The Michigan Army National Guard confirmed the victim is a soldier who was home on leave — although his name was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.
