Detroit Police Seek Person Of Interest In Gas Station Clerk's Fatal Shooting

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are searching for the gunman who killed a gas station clerk on the city's east side.

The shooting happened Tuesday morning at the Clark gas station on 7 Mile Road and Schoenherr.

Authorities say the clerk was killed sometime between the start of his shift at 6 a.m. and 7:15 a.m., when a customer found his body. Other circumstances surrounding the shooting weren't immediately clear and the victim's name was not immediately released.

Police are hoping the public can help identify a person of interest, seen on security images, whom investigators believe may have information about the shooting.

Detroit Police Deputy Chief Renee Hall told WWJ's Ron Dewey there weren't any signs of a robbery; the gunman left all the cash and merchandise behind.

"We have found several spent casings. It looks as if they're two separate casings so it appears that maybe there were two different people firing," she said. "Maybe he got a couple rounds off and the perp got some rounds off. We're just trying to piece all of that information together at this time."

Neighbors in the area speculated drugs might have been a motive of the shooting, due to suspicious activities that have occurred at the location.

"At this particular time, we don't have that information and the precinct officers have not stated that this is a drug gas station. So, often times if they have not reported that to the police, it's not on our radar," Hall said. "But now that we're aware, we'll definitely be visiting this location."

A man who only wanted to be identified as Darren said the victim was his friend, a young man who recently welcomed a new baby.

"I feel real bad. It's tore me up. I mean, for somebody to do that to him, he just was a good guy, a real good guy," he said..

If anyone has seen the person of interest, knows who he is or has any information concerning this incident is urged to call Detroit Police at 596-1527 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
