Man Dies, Trucker Jailed After Multi-Vehicle Crash On I-75
SAULT STE. MARIE (AP) — Authorities say a driver is dead, several others hurt and a trucker jailed after a crash involving a tractor-trailer and several vehicles on an Upper Peninsula interstate near the U.S.-Canada border.
Michigan State Police say 38-year-old Grant Childs of Fort Myers, Florida, died after a tractor-trailer struck his vehicle Friday afternoon on north I-75 in Sault Ste. Marie. Police say the trucker, who is awaiting arraignment on a reckless driving charge, also hit three other vehicles.
Investigators say six people were taken to a hospital with minor to serious injuries.
The trucker, troopers say, failed to stop for the traffic that was backed up as it waited to enter the International Bridge. Police haven't released the truck driver's identity.
Part of the freeway was closed for several hours.
