Man Convicted Of Murder In Death Of U-M Student
ANN ARBOR (WWJ/AP) -- The man accused of shooting and killing a University of Michigan medical student was convicted of murder -- along with other charges -- in court on Friday.
Prosecutors say that 22-year-old Dajeon Franklin fired the bullet that killed 25-year-old Paul DeWolf in his off-campus medical fraternity house in July 2013.
A Washtenaw County jury on Friday found Franklin guilty of felony murder, first-degree home invasion, conspiracy to commit home invasion, second-degree home invasion and felony firearm.
The 22-year-old will be sentenced Nov. 19, while co-defendants Joei Jordan and Shaquille Jones will go on trial in January. Jordan and Jones also face charges of open murder and home invasion.
Thom DeWolf, Paul's father said that he and his family has a sense of closure and sadness for Franklin's family at the same time.
"Today was just the mark of the guilty verdict for one of those guys," DeWolf said. "His family was in court; there was nobody giving high-fives or victory signs or anything, it was a day of sadness, there was a lot of tears on both sides of the aisle here today."
DeWolf was a native of Schoolcraft in southwestern Michigan and a graduate of Grand Valley State University. He was attending medical school on an Air Force scholarship and held the rank of second lieutenant.
"Our heart goes out to them as well, we've all suffered a huge loss," DeWolf said. "It's just tragic -- the initial outcome and then this -- because they're going to lose their son to prison."
