Armored Truck Employee Charged In $580K Heist At Greektown Casino Released On Tether
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A former armored car company worker has been released pending trial and placed on a tether after being accused of stealing more than a half-million dollars from a truck parked in Detroit's Greektown district.
David Troupe had a detention hearing Friday in U.S. District Court. There, Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara Woodward said some money was found at Troupe's home on Burlingame in Detroit, but at least $500,000 remained missing.
Defense attorney Leon Weiss says Troupe denies the charges, and adds money found at his client's home might not be from the robbery.
Authorities say Troupe was dressed in his uniform on Nov. 27 when he approached the Loomis Armored Truck and casually walked away with several bags containing nearly $580,000.
Troupe was acting as if he was working, according to court documents, and the driver allowed him into the truck after Troupe said the wrong bag was taken into a casino for an ATM delivery. Troupe was supposed to work later in the day but called in sick -- claiming to have food poisoning.
The criminal complaint says Troupe was identified by a Loomis supervisor upon being show a surveillance image taken during the crime. He was interviewed by detectives on Nov. 30 and denied any involvement with the crime, providing them with his cell phone number. Cellular tower records produced by the phone company show Troupe's phone was active in and around Greektown Casino on the morning of the robbery, according to documents.
