Man At Fault In Fatal I-75 Chain-Reaction Crash Was Drunk, Police Say
ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - A 49-year-old Rochester Hills man was drunk when he caused a deadly chain-reaction crash on I-75 late Friday night, according to police.
Troy police said the man was driving his Cadillac sedan on northbound I-75, near Maple Road in Troy, when he rear-ended a Chevy pickup truck in the right lane.
The impact caused the truck to veer left and cross over into the left lane, where it was struck a second time by a GMC pickup truck. The first truck then veered into the median ditch, where it rolled over, police said.
All three drivers were hospitalized with injuries, but the lone passenger in the Chevy pickup died at the scene.
Police said a preliminary breath test at the scene of the crash showed the Cadillac driver, whose name has not yet been released, had a BAC of .108. The legal limit in Michigan is .08.
He was arrested at the scene on an expected charge of operating while intoxicated causing death, police said, and was released pending further investigation.
As of Monday afternoon, police had not released any information about the victim.
Witnesses to the crash who have not already been interviewed by detectives are asked to call the Troy Police Department at 248-524-3477
