Man Allegedly Beats Woman With 'The Club' In Case Of Road Rage

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - "The Club", in this case, was not used as intended.

A woman is hospitalized and a man is behind bars after what police say was violent road rage attack on a freeway ramp.

According to Michigan State Police, a 35-year-old Belleville woman was exiting I-94 via the US-23 ramp, Tuesday night, when a silver Chevy Impala passed her on the right and cut in front of her.

She couldn't stop in time, Trooper Pat Gallagher said, and the man got angry when he was bumped.

Both drivers pulled over and the man hopped out of his car armed with once-popular anti-theft device "The Club" which he used to strike her multiple times, Gallagher said.

The man fled the scene following the assault; but, fortunately, there were witnesses.

"There actually was a truckload of construction workers that were on their way to a job site and...one guy called and the gave an accurate plate. And ultimately that's how we were able to track that guy down," Gallagher said.

The woman drove herself to University of Michigan Hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

"She was pretty swollen on her arms," Gallagher said. "We thought she might have a broken arm, but I think she ended up being OK."

Police on Wednesday arrested the suspect, a 34-year-old Romulus man, at his home.

He was taken to the Washtenaw County Jail pending an arraignment.

No names have been released.
