Macomb Residents At Risk Of Losing Home Offered Program To Help

MACOMB (WWJ) - Macomb County residents who face losing their home to foreclosure can take advantage of a program being offered by county officials. "Keep Macomb Your Home" is aimed at helping taxpayers pay on-time -- before the March 31 deadline.

Macomb County Treasurer Derek Miller says they've partnered with MSU Extension to teach people financial literary and provide assistance.

"There's issues everywhere with people facing tax foreclosure and it's really a cycle of poverty ... there's an economy that's improving a lot over the last 10 years, however, there are people who are stuck in financial difficulties - through either health concerns or through losing their position, or employment and they need assistance," said Miller.

He says that the county is motivated to help people keep their homes and help keep the investment in their community.

"We are not the tax police," said Miller. "We want people to not feel fear, and be paralyzed by that fear of possibly losing their home," he says.

Miller says residents need to understand how taxes work and how to dig themselves out of a difficult financial time.

You can go in person at 1 South Main Street in Mt. Clemens or check out the treasurer's website for more information.
