Macomb County Teen Charged With Drunk Driving After Hit-And-Run Crash

MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - A Macomb County teenager whose grandmother turned her in for a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a pedestrian is now facing drunk driving charges.

Seventeen-year old Christina Sparkman, of Macomb Township, was arraigned Thursday in Shelby Township's 41-A District Court on charges of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment, and operating a motor vehicle – minor with any blood alcohol concentration (BAC).

The charges stem from an accident that happened shortly after midnight March 4 near the intersection of 21 Mile and Garfield roads in Macomb Township. Police say Sparkman was driving northbound on Garfield Road when she struck a 28-year-old Macomb Township man and fled the scene.

Another motorist found the injured man lying in the roadway around 12:40 a.m. and contacted police, who immediately responded to the area. The man, who was critically injured, is still recovering.

As police were investigating the accident, they received a phone call around 1:50 a.m. from Sparkman's grandmother, who was calling to turn her granddaughter in. Police talked to the teen driver, who admitted to hitting the pedestrian, and placed her under arrest.

Officers gave Sparkman a breathalyzer test, but declined to release the results. The legal limit for minors under Michigan's Zero Tolerance Law is .02 percent.

Sparkman was given a $5,000 personal and is due back in court on April 29.
