Macomb County Jail Loosens Restrictions On Inmate Mail

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. (AP) - The Macomb County sheriff's department has loosened its restrictions on inmate mail.

Prison Legal News filed a federal lawsuit in June, saying the jail's policy amounted to censorship of its monthly journal and other correspondence.

Personal mail to the jail in Mount Clemens had been restricted to 5-inch by 7-inch postcards and magazine subscriptions were restricted to a list of 12 titles. The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens reports Sheriff Anthony Wickersham wouldn't say whether the change was in response to the lawsuit.

Prison Legal News still wants an injunction on the more-restrictive policy. The Detroit Free Press reports a hearing is Sept. 30.

Jail officials had said the mail policy was designed to cut down on contraband and reduce the time it took officers to screen mailings and publications.
