Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson undergoes surgery after injury to left tibia vs. Cowboys

Lions players speak on Aidan Hutchinson's injury, Tigers talk future plans after playoffs

(CBS DETROIT) - Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was carted off the field with a serious injury to his left tibia on a sack of Dallas' Dak Prescott in the third quarter.

The team quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the game with a lower leg injury.

Hutchinson was staying in the Dallas area for surgery, Lions coach Dan Campbell said after Sunday's 47-9 win over the Cowboys.

On Monday morning, the Detroit Lions posted the following update about Hutchinson:

"Aidan Hutchinson underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured tibia and fibula at Baylor White Medical Center in Irving, Texas last night.

Hutchinson will return to Detroit this week and is expected to make a full recovery. There is no timeline for his return to play at this time."

Hutchinson's leg appeared to snap above the ankle when it collided with the left leg of teammate Alim McNeill as Hutchinson was pulling Prescott down in the third quarter.

"I haven't seen it myself so I couldn't really tell," McNeill said. "I didn't know if it was him or not, but I did feel somebody like leg-whip me, and then I see Hutch down. That's wild to see. I hate that for him."

There was a delay of about 10 minutes as medical personnel tended to Hutchinson while players from both teams made a large circle around the second overall pick in the 2022 draft.

"That's hard for everybody when you're standing there and that's one of yours and something like that happens," Campbell said. "If you dwell on that too much and you start playing a little timid, that's when you get hurt. So guys snapped right back in and they lived in the moment where we're on."

After Hutchinson was loaded onto a cart with a cast on his leg, teammates and Dallas players reached over to pat the 24-year-old.

Hutchinson was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September, tallying 6.5 sacks. In Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he registered a career-high 4.5 sacks.

Hutchinson's family released the following statement on Instagram Monday evening:

"In light of Aidan's injury last night, we want to thank you all for the outpouring of love and well wishes. Your support through this shocking situation means so much to our family.

"We are blessed to share that Aidan's surgery was a success. Thank you to the doctors and nurses who have taken such good care of him.

"Aidan wants you all to know that his healing and redemption story has begun. He is holding the motto of Detroit close to heart: resurget cineribus.

"He will rise from the ashes."
