Jury Convicts Mother In Boy's Death From Benadryl Overdose

PORT HURON (WWJ/AP) - A jury has convicted a 34-year-old St. Clair County mother in her son's death from a Benadryl overdose.

Elizabeth Long was found guilty Thursday of second-degree murder and second-degree child abuse, according to The Times Herald. Sixteen-month-old Lukas died in January 2015.

Investigators say he had at least 10 times the normal amount of the medication in his system. Long testified she gave him a teaspoon of Benadryl and a chewable Motrin the day he died.

Police say they twice went to Long's home before his death, once when she fell asleep standing up with Lukas on the changing table and when her vehicle stalled as she tried to leave her children and go to a gas station.

She faces up to life in prison at her April 14 sentencing.
