Jordan Zimmermann Named American League Pitcher Of The Month

DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit Tigers starter Jordan Zimmermann was named American League Pitcher of the Month for April, the MLB announced on Monday.

Zimmermann -- who signed a five-year, $110 million contract with the Tigers in November -- began his stint with the Tigers in impressive fashion. In five starts in April, he amassed a 5-0 record, 0.55 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched.

The right-hander started his Tigers career by throwing 24 1/3 scoreless innings over the course of his first four games. The streak came to an end with no outs in the sixth inning against the Oakland Athletics on April 25 when Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins lost a ball in the lights, allowing Marcus Semien to score from second base.

This is the second time Zimmermann has won a Pitcher of the Month award, after first winning the award in the National League in July 2012.

Zimmermann is the first Tigers pitcher to win AL Pitcher of the Month honors since Justin Verlander won the award in April 2012, according to the team.
