Jesse Jackson: Syrian Refugees Should Be Welcomed In US
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson says Syrian refugees should be welcomed in the U.S. and turning them away is legally and morally wrong.
The civil rights leader's remarks came Sunday in Dearborn. He says governors who have spoken out against federal refugee policies following the deadly attacks in Paris "are playing on our fears."
Jackson says: "You cannot worship a refugee Jesus on Sunday, then lock the doors."
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has urged a pause in the resettlement program until security concerns are addressed. Other Republican governors have sought to block Syrians.
The Obama administration has announced plans to accept about 10,000 Syrians refugees.
Democratic Rep. John Conyers of Michigan says the U.S. should welcome 10 times that number, saying current plans are too few for a nation of immigrants.
