It's Only A Test: Agencies Hold Mock Crash Landing At Detroit Airport

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Detroit agencies are conducting a disaster training exercise involving a mock crash landing at the city's municipal airport.

The exercise is set to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Coleman A. Young International Airport, on the city's east side.

The exercise will use a live crash burn simulator, and will help train and prepare crews for fire suppression, safety, evidence collection and property conservation.

Fire Captain Gerard Funderberg said this annual drill makes sure personnel, equipment and protocol are up to the challenge.

"We're very fortunate here in the city of Detroit, we haven't had really major emergencies concerning plane crashes, things like that, but if it ever does happen we want to make sure that we're prepared and we're ready to spring into action if need be," Funderberg told WWJ's Ron Dewey.

Agencies involved in the drill include the Detroit police and fire departments and the Wayne County Medical Examiner.
