Investigation Underway After Detroit Cop Car Window Suddenly Shatters

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit police officer is shaken up after one of his patrol car's windows suddenly shattered on the city's northwest side.

Police Chief James Craig said the officer was struck in the face with broken glass but wasn't hurt in the incident Monday afternoon in the area of Evergreen Road and Dover.

"Initially, he believed that maybe he was fired upon — could've been by a pellet gun, not certain," Craig told reporters. "He checked the area...and there's, again, no evidence that the officer was fired at."

An investigation into what did happen is ongoing.

"We're gonna have our evidence techs come out and go through the vehicle and make sure," Craig said. "I took a look at the vehicle. The window is clearly shattered — could've been a pellet, could've been, you know, a BB; not certain...But there's no evidence at this point that it was from any type of firearm."

Craig but he's concerned about the recent tide of violence against police across the country as officers have been shot at in two recent episodes in Detroit.

"One, last night, as you know...Officers were shot at during the course of a robbery investigation," the chief said. "And two weeks prior to that, our tactical response unit was also fired upon."
