Inmate killed after attack in cell in Macomb County prison
LENOX TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP/ CBS DETROIT) — A state prisoner in southeastern Michigan apparently was attacked and killed, authorities said.
The death occurred Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the prison in Macomb County's Lenox Township. The Michigan State Police were contacted and were on scene. The Michigan Department of Corrections Wellness Team was also activated and were present to support staff dealing with this traumatic incident.
MDOC spokesman Chris Gautz said, a prisoner stabbed another multiple times in the back, arm and face.
"Once subdued and an ambulance called for the injured prisoner, staff went to inspect the cell of the prisoner assailant for contraband. Once in the cell, officers discovered the prisoner assailant's cellmate inside with severe injuries. Staff attempted life saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased. There is no known motive at this time," read a statement.
Gautz confirmed the deceased prisoner was 28-year-old Ruben Martinez.
The assailant was transferred to a maximum security facility. The prisoner who was stabbed was treated at the hospital and returned to the prison later that day.
