Icy I-96 Reopens After Multi-Vehicle Accident

REDFORD TWP. (WWJ) - A popular stretch of I-96 in Metro Detroit has reopened after icy road conditions caused a multi-vehicle accident.

The situation unfolded Tuesday morning just as the morning rush hour traffic was picking up. At least five vehicles are involved.

Police said initially, there was an accident in the freeway's westbound lanes just east of Inkster in Redford Township. After that, other vehicles that had slowed down to approach the scene apparently ended up crashing into each other, according to police.

"These cars slid across the road. Some of them ended up sideways and some of them are completely turned around, hitting into each other," said Traffic Reporter Bill Szumanski, who was over the scene in WWJ's Chopper 950.

One woman was taken away from the scene in an ambulance after hitting her head. No other injuries were reported.

Police said icy conditions combined with a curve in the road likely contributed to the crash, which remains under investigation.
