I-696 Closed Monday Morning Following Rollover Crash
WARREN (WWJ) - Authorities say alcohol and fatigue may have played a part in an early morning crash that closed a portion of I-696 for several hours on Monday.
According to Michigan State Police, a driver lost control of his 2000 Dodge Neon before going up the embankment on the eastbound side and rolling over on the freeway. The car came to rest on its roof in the far left lane. The driver was thrown from the vehicle.
Police said he suffered severe injuries and was in surgery Monday afternoon at St. John's Hospital in Detroit. A passenger had minor injuries.
Eastbound 696 was closed for more than three hours, near Fairfield in Warren, causing a morning rush hour traffic jam. The freeway reopened at around 9 a.m.
An investigation is on going. No names have been released.
