One Person Killed After Driver Slams Into Stopped Car On I-275 Shoulder

LIVONIA (WWJ) - Police were forced to close a portion of I-275 in Livonia during the morning rush hour after one person was killed in an accident.

The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday on northbound I-275 near 8 Mile Road.

According to police,  a maroon 1992 Chrysler LeBaron was stopped on the left shoulder of I-275 when it was struck from behind by a silver 2014 Ford Fusion, driven by a 27-year-old Trenton man.

The impact of the collision caused the Chrysler to catch fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, although their identity has not yet been released.

The Trenton man was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The freeway was closed for nearly five hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.
