Detroit organization seeking donations to help struggling families pay water bills

Detroit nonprofit helping with water bills during the holidays

(CBS DETROIT) — Hydrate Detroit is looking to help families pay their water bills.

The water relief nonprofit says around 150,000 people throughout the Motor City are struggling to afford their water bills.

Right now, the organization is looking for donations to help out those in need this holiday season.

Organizers say water is a human right.

"We know that the holidays become stressful, but also at this time of year you need water for your heat, you need water to cook and you need water to keep warm, said Demeeko Williams, chief executive director of Hydrate Detroit. "We want to make sure that everyone reaches out to us, but also donate to the cause so that we can continue helping people get their water turned back on."

Anyone who is able to and wants to help out can donate here.

Hydrate Detroit offers emergency water delivery, restoration of water services, volunteer training and more.
