Grandmother Faces Sentencing In Teen's 1998 Beating Death
FLINT (WWJ/AP) - A 75-year-old Michigan woman is returning to court to be sentenced for the 1998 beating death of her teenage granddaughter.
Lois Janish of Flint pleaded no contest to second-degree murder in the death of 14-year-old Coral Hall. She was charged about two years ago.
Hall disappeared in 1998 after using a pay phone near the White Horse Tavern in Flint. Her remains haven't been found.
John Potbury said Hall went missing after calling a friend asking for a place to stay, saying she had been fighting with her grandmother. The friend told police that they made plans to meet later, but Hall never showed up. At the time, Hall was living with Janish and Janish's boyfriend, who is now dead.
Years after the murder, a police detective said Janish admitted to beating her granddaughter with a hammer and scattering the dismembered remains with help from a boyfriend.
Janish reportedly wrote a letter apologizing for dumping Hall's body and agreed to help authorities search for Hall's remains, but three searches were conducted and no remains were found.
